SETTING
The old time Hollywood classic HATARI! was shot when Tanzania was not yet independent. The prime minister of the time and later president, Julius Nyerere - a big admirer of the production - often made his way to Momella, on the northern edge of the present-day Arusha National Park to visit both the film location and the famous actors. At Momella Paramount Pictures built various buildings on the land of the Trappe family, an old settlers family from the German colonial time. The main building seen in the film still exists, although now run-down and integrated into the Momella Lodge.
Other locations for the film were the town of Arusha, the plains around Lake Manyara as well as the traditional Maasai land north of Momella.
Probably the most striking images at the beginning of the movie are the wild off-road driving scenes filmed on the floor of Ngorongoro Crater in pursuit of rhino with a lasso! A sight unimaginable, unheard of and unlawful today. |
