SHU'MATA CAMP EXPERIENCE

„SHU’MATA” is a Maasai name and it means ‘HEAVEN’ or above the clouds!

The camp is located at the foot of Kilimanjaro, deep in the traditional Masai land, in an area known as Private Amboseli. Large East African tents, in true Hemingway style, form a line on a hill with magnificent views in all directions. At the front of the camp bush savannah melts into the slopes of Kilimanjaro, towering above into the blue skies of Africa, so close that on a moonlit night details of the glaciers can be visible.

Seasonally the surrounding savannah bush teams with wildlife – herds of elephant, eland, zebra, wildebeest and Oryx as well as Grants and Thompson Gazelle.

There are for now five comfortable safari tents in the true Hemingway style. Three more are in progress and due to be finished by mid 2011. All have en-suite bathrooms decorated colourfully with Masai art. Each tent has its own veranda with up-lifting views. Outside, under the great African sky, the open fireplace adds a true feeling of adventure and safari romance. A Hemingway Whiskey blends in perfectly with the sounds of crickets, barking zebra and the distant roar of a lion.

From Hatari only a three-hour comfortable and scenic drive away; we take guests through our “private Amboseli” to enjoy an exclusive bush experience as an add-on to their stay at the Hatari Lodge.
